28 September 2026 · Pinned Windows that are easier to resize, and windows that open where you are working.

Fixed

Resizing a Pinned Window. A window shot pinned with its shadow now resizes from the window's own edges, not from the transparent shadow around it. A band just inside every edge resizes the pin, with the resize cursor showing even while another app is active, and the hover border follows the window's rounded corner instead of thinning there.

Windows open on the display you are using. The Editor, the Trim Editor and the GIF player open on the display under the pointer, sized for that display, instead of always on the main one.

The Editor's Background preview. The backdrop and its shadow are drawn only around the padded capture, matching the exported file, instead of filling the whole editor.

27 September 2026 · The Capture Menu, and fixes for Scrolling Capture.

Capture Menu. Hold ⌥⌘S and a wheel of every capture mode opens at the pointer: Screenshot, Scrolling Capture, Record, Self-Timer, Capture Text, Capture Set, Open from Clipboard and History. Rest on a mode for its options (Region, Window or Display, the self-timer's seconds) and click one, or pick with the keys 1 to 8. A tap of ⌥⌘S captures as before, and if you moved Capture to another shortcut, hold that one instead.

Scrolling Capture of a window. A Chrome window no longer stops growing partway down a page, a sidebar with a gradient background (as in Arc) no longer comes back striped, and a sidebar that pins under a header, like the file tree beside a GitHub pull request, is no longer repeated down the capture, footer included.

Scrolling Capture's rail. The thumbnail holds still when you pause, instead of jumping a line.

26 September 2026 · Fixes for Scrolling Capture, Smart Redact, History, the editor, recording and MCP.

MCP. On a new install, Take new screenshots starts on and each assistant asks before its first capture, unless you choose the area yourself. A capture that fails while an assistant waits is reported to the assistant, not shown as an alert.

Scrolling Capture. The area you chose keeps its outline while you scroll, and what was stitched so far is kept if capturing stops or the save fails.

Smart Redact. A capture that couldn't be redacted is marked Needs review, and its tile's menu offers Redact in Editor… and Publish Without Redacting….

History and Editor. Choosing an Auto-delete period asks before anything goes to the Trash, and text you're typing in the editor is no longer lost to a double-click.

Recording, quitting and the keyboard. Clicks on Snapline's own controls no longer show as click rings, quitting waits at most two minutes for work in progress and names anything unfinished at the next launch, and a region can be chosen and adjusted from the keyboard in Record Screen and Scrolling Capture.

24 September 2026 · Fixes for quitting, Smart Redact, History, the editor and recording, and a note for MCP users.

MCP permissions. If you turned any on in 2.40.0, they're off after this update: turn them on again in Settings → MCP.

Quitting asks first. Quitting or installing an update now asks before it closes an editor with unsaved changes or a Scrolling Capture in progress.

Smart Redact. Window captures and Tall Captures stay private until they're redacted, and a capture whose redaction fails is kept private instead of saved as it was.

History. Captures in a folder Snapline can't reach are no longer dropped, and Remove from History… takes one out when its folder is gone for good.

Editor. Copy, Pin, Save to File and Done now include an edit still in progress, such as a crop not yet applied.

Recording. A recording that is slow to finish saving is filed as soon as it's done, and no longer ends a recording you started in the meantime.

21 September 2026 · Your AI assistant can see your screen through Snapline, when you say so: a local MCP server, off until you turn it on.

New

MCP server. Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Codex and Antigravity can now ask Snapline to look at a window, read an error dialog, or find a screenshot you already took, so you stop pasting screenshots into a chat. Settings → MCP. It ships off, and updating Snapline does not turn it on.

Three separate switches. Turning the server on lets an assistant read the captures already in your History, and nothing else. Taking new captures is its own switch. Writing copies to disk is a third, and only into one folder you choose; nothing is ever overwritten.

Snapline asks first. A capture raises a small Allow or Deny card under the menu bar icon that names the assistant and exactly what it wants to capture, and never takes the keyboard away from what you are typing. Choose Ask every time, Ask once per session, or Allow. No answer in 20 seconds is a no. You can also answer from the Snapline menu, with the keyboard or VoiceOver. A client's name is whatever it calls itself, and Settings says so.

You always know. Every capture an assistant takes shows a toast that says who took it, and the menu bar icon shows when the server is running and when a client is connected. Stopping the server, regenerating the token, or pressing Forget drops every assistant's standing approval.

Redactions hold. An assistant only ever receives the flattened image, so anything you redacted stays redacted; the unredacted original is never offered, at any setting. With Smart Redact after capture turned on, text read off the screen for an assistant has the same sensitive items removed and marked.

Text instead of pixels. An assistant can ask for the text in a window or in a capture rather than the image, laid out as plain text, a table or code. It is faster, and it costs a fraction of the tokens.

Scrolling Capture on request. An assistant can ask you for a Scrolling Capture of a page taller than the screen; you do the scrolling, it receives the Tall Capture. If nobody starts scrolling, Snapline puts it away.

Two-minute setup. Settings → MCP has a copy-ready snippet for each client with the address and token already filled in, and Install Skill adds Snapline's Agent Skill for Claude Code and Codex. The token lives in your Keychain and is copied as a concealed clipboard item, so clipboard managers keep it out of their history.

Local only. The server listens on 127.0.0.1 and nowhere else, refuses anything that reaches it from a web page, and runs only while Snapline is running.

20 September 2026 · Capture Text: drag over any words on screen and they're on your clipboard, no screenshot saved.

New

Capture Text. Press ⌥⌘E, or choose Capture Text in the menu bar, and the familiar crosshair appears wearing a "Capture Text" caption. Drag over any text on screen (a paused video, a slide in a call, a dialog that won't let you select) and the text is on your clipboard, recognized on your Mac. No screenshot is saved. The confirmation shows the first line it read; an area with no text says "No text found in that area" and saves nothing.

Text clips. Each read is kept as a text clip, a small plain-text file saved where your screenshots go, with its own card and a Text chip in History. Search finds a clip by any word in it, and the Text View opens it as text alone, with per-block copy and translation. Turning off Index text in screenshots leaves clips alone.

Copy-only, if you'd rather. Settings → History → Keep text clips in History. Turned off, a read is copied and that's all: no file, no History entry, no card.

Paragraphs come back whole. Copied text no longer keeps the line breaks of the window it was read from: lines that only wrapped are joined, and the breaks the source meant (list items, short lines, code, blank lines) stay. It applies to every Copy Text. Settings → History → Join lines into paragraphs; hold Option over Copy All in the Text View to copy the other way once.

Copy as Table and Copy as Code. Text that reads as a grid copies as tab-separated cells, ready for Numbers or Excel; code copies with its indentation rebuilt. Each appears only where that shape was found.

Tables read more completely. Recognition goes back for digits it dropped from a numeric table column and fills only the cells that came back empty, never with a guess, and smaller captures are read at twice their size. Search, Copy Text, Select Text and Smart Redact all read the better text.

The first read is quick. Snapline prepares text recognition at launch, so the first Capture Text after an install or an update no longer sits on "Recognizing…" for five or six seconds.

Select Text. A right-click over a text selection in the editor now offers Copy, Redact and Highlight, instead of shape commands that were all greyed out.

Shortcuts. A shortcut you chose now always wins over one a newer version ships with. If ⌥⌘E was already one of your Snapline shortcuts, yours stays, and Capture Text waits for a chord in Settings → Shortcuts.

Fixed

Scrolling capture: a button fixed on the page now appears once instead of in every strip; a page border that ended partway is no longer painted down the capture; a window's rounded corners no longer leave black notches at the first seam; and the discard question no longer opens behind the side rail.

18 September 2026 · Select Text: drag across the words on a capture to copy, redact or highlight them, right in the editor.

New

Select Text. A new editor tool, beside the select tool on the rail, selects the text in a capture right on the image, the way Preview does. Press to place a caret, double-click for a word, triple-click for a line, and drag to extend by the character. The selection runs in reading order: a span from the middle of one line to the middle of a later one holds every line between them whole, past the end of a line it runs to the line's end, and below the last line to the end of the text.

Copy, redact or highlight what you selected. ⌘C copies the selection. R or H, or the Inspector's Redact and Highlight buttons, cover exactly the selected characters with one redaction or highlight per line, as a single undo step, and the tool stays active for the next selection. The tool never creates a shape on its own.

Double-click a word. In the select tool, a double-click on a word of the capture now enters Select Text with that word selected (it used to drop a text box on top of it). A double-click clear of any text still places a text box, and holding Option keeps the old behaviour everywhere.

Columns and panes read one after another. Two terminal panes or two page columns side by side are read left column whole, then right, so a drag down one pane never takes the other's lines. It takes three or more lines level with each other across a clear gutter to make columns; a chat transcript or a row of labels stays in row order.

Right-to-left text. A bidirectional line selects by its logical characters, with the carets laid out through Core Text and fitted to the words on the capture.

Where it draws the line. Text under an existing redaction, outside the crop, or in a hidden capture is not offered. Recognition runs once per editor window, on device, as soon as the capture is decoded, so the tool opens without a wait; "Recognizing text…" shows only if you get there first.

17 September 2026 · First-time setup is a guided six-step walk, it survives the relaunch macOS 14 needs for the Screen Recording grant, and Homebrew installs the official cask.

New

First-time setup is a guided walk. The welcome window is now a six-step wizard — Welcome, Screen Recording, Shortcuts, Menu Bar, Start at Login, Ready — with a sidebar that ticks off each step and a "Step n of 6" chip. Screen Recording is still the only permission it asks for: the step says the state in a word (Not requested, Requested, Granted), makes Grant the one prominent button while the grant is missing, and offers System Settings once macOS's single prompt has been spent. Shortcuts shows the live chords with a "Try it now" line, Show Me drops a "Snapline is here" bubble under the menu bar icon, and Start at Login is proposed and applied only when you press Get Started — closing the window applies nothing.

Setup survives the relaunch macOS 14 needs. On Sonoma a Screen Recording grant reaches a running app only after it relaunches, and System Settings says so. The wizard says so too, offers Quit & Reopen Snapline, and comes back on the same step reading Granted. Quitting mid-setup never counts as finishing it.

Homebrew.
brew install --cask snapline
installs the same signed, notarized build from the official cask.

15 September 2026 · GIFs play in Snapline, a GIF can be re-cut from its recording, Convert to GIF moves into the Trim Editor, and recording and GIF cards get the still card's frame.

New

GIFs play in Snapline. Play on a GIF's card or tile opens it in a player of its own, with a frame scrubber and a counter that reads position over total in frames and in seconds ("119 / 239 · 11.8 / 23.9 s"), so the seconds can never be mistaken for the GIF's length. The GIF's own actions sit beside it.

Adjust GIF. A GIF remembers the recording it was converted from. "Adjust GIF…" reopens the Trim Editor on that recording, seeded with the GIF's crop and range, and Replace GIF writes a new GIF in its place: same History entry, same file name. The export runs beside the original and is swapped in only when it succeeds, so a cancel or a failure leaves the GIF you had untouched.

Convert to GIF, in one window. The GIF options no longer have a window of their own. Convert to GIF… opens the Trim Editor with a crop layer over the player, the range on the scrubber, and the presets, size, frame rate, speed, dither and loop controls under it with the live size estimate. Convert is the footer's single click; progress stays on the card's pill or the History tile as before. "Show these options each time" still turns the card's GIF button into a one-click conversion with the remembered options.

Recording and GIF cards wear the still card's frame. The frosted frame the still card shows on hover now surrounds recordings and GIFs too. A recording card carries Star and Reveal in Finder down the left, dismiss, Copy and Save on the right, and Play and GIF across the bottom band; GIF reads Cancel while a conversion runs. The caption reads length over size and format. A GIF card carries Play across the band and leads its caption with the loop length. Recording cards are keyboard-navigable now.

One editor per recording. A Trim window and a Convert or Adjust window never open side by side on the same recording; asking for the second brings the first forward. A conversion the app refuses now says why in the feedback bubble, and the options lock while an export is running.

Fixed

Flipping a GIF option could quit the app. Changing Dither gradients, or any option, while the size estimate was still reading the recording could take Snapline down, and Cancel mid-conversion could do the same. The reader is now stopped only by the thread that owns it.

Live zoom follows the cursor on display and region takes. With Highlight Clicks off, a zoom on a display or region recording landed where you pressed and never panned. It follows the pointer now, as window recordings always did.

Recording controls readable in Light Mode. The floating pill and its edge tab draw white on dark glass, and under Light Mode the glass went near-white over a light desktop. The panel is pinned to dark now, collapsed timer included.

Collections: Group captures by project. The History window gains a sidebar with All Captures, Starred and one row per Collection, each wearing a four-thumbnail cover, plus an overview page of cover cards. A Collection is a label, not a folder: a capture can sit in several, and the file on disk never moves. Anything in a Collection is kept — exempt from auto-delete like a starred capture — and deleting a Collection deletes no capture. Drag tiles onto a sidebar row or a cover card to add them, or use Add to Collection ▸ on a tile's menu. Inside a Collection, ⌫ and the hover ✕ mean Remove from Collection; Move to Trash stays in the menu.

Custom order, and a project view: Each Collection opens on a project header with its cover, a note, and a Newest | Custom order. Custom order reorders by drag and carries through Quick Look, Export (numbered names) and Combine, so a walkthrough exports in the order you arranged it.

File new captures as they land: Choose File New Captures Into ▸ from the menu bar and every capture — stills, scrolling captures, recordings, GIFs, imports and Combine output — joins that Collection the moment it is saved. A dot on the status icon and a chip on the Quick Access card say filing is on, with a one-click way back out. A GIF inherits its recording's Collections; a Combine result the union of its sources'.

Screenshots | Recordings | GIFs: A chip row above the History grid narrows any view to one medium, with a count per chip, and stays put as you move between All Captures, Starred and Collections. Starred moves into the sidebar, and the History toolbar now draws over the grid so tiles never show through its buttons.

Updates no longer wait for a quit that never comes: A menu-bar app is never quit, so with "Automatically download and install updates" on, Sparkle could hold a downloaded update for up to a week and then offer one the feed had already superseded. An update found by a scheduled check is now announced in the status menu — "Snapline X is available…" — and, when automatic install is on, installs itself the first time the app is quiet: no capture running, nothing being filed, no window or pin on screen. Until then the row reads "Install Snapline X and Relaunch", for whenever you would rather not wait. A recording still finalizes before the relaunch.

Help: The feature tour lists Collections.

13 September 2026 · A fix for a crash in Settings → Shortcuts. It follows 2.34.0 on the same day, so that release's notes are repeated below.

Fixed

Clicking a shortcut row no longer quits the app. On some Macs, clicking Capture — or any row — in Settings → Shortcuts to record a new chord took the whole app down, and the eyedropper's value label could go the same way. The labels' typeface tripped a fault inside macOS's text engine that no app can recover from. Both now draw with the system font, the one menus print shortcuts in, with digits kept aligned, so a chord and a hex value read as they did.

New in 2.34.0, released earlier today

Live zoom: Press ⌥⌘Z mid-recording and the take pushes in to 2× on whatever the pointer is over, eased in over a third of a second; press it again to come back out. The framing then follows the pointer, moving only once it nears the edge of what is on screen, so nothing jitters or drifts. While you are zoomed, a yellow guide on the recording's boundary marks exactly what is being filmed, with the magnification beside it — the guide is Snapline's own chrome and never lands in the movie. Region, window and whole-display takes all zoom. The zoom button sits on the floating recording control beside Stop and Pause, and Zoom In / Zoom Out is in the menu bar as well.

Zoomed in the frames, so everything downstream keeps it: The zoom is composited into the recorded frames rather than applied afterwards, so a trim, a Convert to GIF and a share all carry it, with nothing to re-export. It cannot be removed from a finished recording — one more press takes it back while the take is still running. Click rings scale and stay put with the content they ring; the keystroke capsule and the camera bubble hold their size and position through a zoom.

⌥⌘Z belongs to your other apps between takes: The zoom chord is held only while a recording is running and given back the moment it ends, so ⌥⌘Z stays Step Backward in Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects the rest of the time. It is rebindable in Settings → Shortcuts like every other chord, and Snapline's own record and zoom chords are kept out of the keystroke capsule so they never flash in the movie.

Help: The feature tour names the live zoom and the floating recording controls, and the Help window fits a 13-inch display again on both tabs.

Floating recording controls: Every recording now has its own control, mounted right beside the recorded area the moment frames start: Stop, Pause/Resume and the running time, a hairline, then switches for Highlight Clicks, Show Keystrokes and Camera, and a chevron that collapses it to a small red dot with the time. It floats above full-screen apps and follows you across Spaces, and it never shows up in the recording or in a screenshot. Two styles under Settings → Recording: the Pill, a capsule that sits above the recorded area and can be dragged anywhere on the screen, or the Edge tab, a strip docked to the left or right screen edge that snaps to the nearer edge when you let go. Hide Recording Controls in the menu bar hides it for the current take only; the menu bar's own stop control is unchanged.

Change overlays mid-take: Highlight Clicks and Show Keystrokes can be switched on or off while a recording is running, from the floating control or from Settings → Recording, and the camera bubble can be shown or hidden during a display or region recording. Nothing prompts for a permission mid-take; a switch that would need one waits for the next recording.

Recordings no longer stop on their own: Some takes ended by themselves at 5, 10 or 15 seconds with nothing pressed: the movie writer was refusing a fragment of the file every so often, and Snapline saved what it had. Recordings are now encoded without frame reordering, which removes the failure. Files are a few percent larger and the last frame lands sooner after you stop.

Redaction: Blur and pixelate boxes are fully opaque everywhere, including over a window's drop shadow, a transparent region, and the box's own edges — and the box is solid while you are still dragging it out. Nothing of what is underneath survives into the export.

Exports keep the capture's density and colour: PNG, JPEG, HEIC and WebP exports now carry the Retina density and the display's colour profile they were captured with, so a P3 screenshot stays P3 and prints at the right size. Backgrounds are drawn in the same space.

Quick Access cards: Star works on recording and GIF cards. A card whose file was deleted retires instead of offering a dead drag. Escape after Use Keyboard on Latest Capture hands the keyboard back to the app you were in. The card panel is excluded from your own captures, and a lone “Checking…” card can be dismissed and times out on its own.

Pinned windows: Dragging a pin no longer steals keyboard focus from the app behind it; click a pin and Escape or ⌘W closes it. A pressed pin comes to the front. Pins are capped at eight.

Editor: Undo with a text box open no longer inserts a phantom step, and arrow-key nudges make one undo step per burst. Closing the editor cancels its background work. Opening a capture no longer claims unsaved changes. Double-click places no text box in the crop or eyedropper tools, and Smart Redact leaves the crop tool alone. Layer sliders scrub more smoothly, oversized backgrounds and layers are refused with a reason, and the canvas is readable by VoiceOver.

Recording: In a window recording, the camera bubble is recorded where you moved it. Taking a still during a recording keeps the desktop icons hidden. Display changes mid-take keep click highlights in place, and a keystroke or click overlay the system refuses is announced instead of silently missing.

Scrolling Capture: Finishing a tall capture uses about a third of the memory it did, and quitting while it is being saved waits for the file.

History: Deleting many captures, retention and export run in the background with progress and a Cancel button. Undo after a bulk delete restores everything, even if you started a second delete meanwhile. Deleting a starred capture from the status menu asks first and offers Undo Delete.

Capture-time Smart Redact: The unredacted shot stays out of your screenshots folder while the pass runs, and a capture interrupted mid-pass is recovered at next launch, redacted.

Settings: Return in the Reset All Settings dialog cancels instead of resetting. The shortcut recorder disarms when its window loses focus. The Advanced pane's Grant Access row matches onboarding.

Licensing: A renewal extends your existing license — no new key to paste; the app picks up the longer window on its next check. Deactivate on a Mac that only holds a receipt no longer burns the seat, and Return activates from the activation window.

Record Screen bar: Microphone and Camera are now split controls: one click turns each on or off, and the small chevron beside it opens the device menu, so you can pick which microphone to record and which camera the bubble shows. System Audio, Highlight Clicks and Show Keystrokes are toggles of their own. The bar no longer changes width while it is open, and everything fits under a window selection on a 13-inch display.

Camera bubble: Shape and border style moved onto the bubble itself. Hover it and three badges appear on its rim beside the resize handle: one flips between circle and rectangle, one shows the current border style and opens the presets menu, with Customize… leading to the full editor in Settings. Picking a camera from the bar turns the bubble on and swaps a live preview in place. The badges are off once recording starts; resizing still works mid-take.

Region selection: The size readout now appears only while you are drawing or resizing a region and steps aside once the size is settled, in Record Screen and Scrolling Capture alike.

Fixes: The pointer is an arrow over the Record Screen bar again, including its gaps and disabled controls, and switching modes no longer replaces the cursor another window had set.

Export location: In Settings → General, the export folder's path under Export location is now a link: click it, or the folder button beside it, to open that folder in Finder. If a custom folder is no longer reachable, the built-in one opens instead, as captures already fall back to it.

Lazy-loading pages: Tall Capture could stall — the rail kept saying capturing while nothing new was appended, and the file sometimes ended at half the page. The matcher now checks the whole overlap between frames, not just the strip where lazy content resolves, so a placeholder turning into an image no longer reads as no motion.

Animated content mid-page: a page with an animated block partway down the viewport could break the join outright. A row's match is now judged block by block, so a small moving region can no longer sink an otherwise-matching row.

Recovery: a frame that lost its place mid-scroll could never find it again, and every later frame failed too. It now re-anchors against the picture already captured, accepted only on strong, unambiguous evidence.

Show your clicks and keys in screen recordings

Highlight Clicks: every mouse click draws a brief expanding ring at the pointer — dual-tone, so it reads against any background. Display and region recordings.

Show Keystrokes: the keys you press appear in a capsule at the bottom of the movie, with shortcuts in the same ⌃⌥⇧⌘ symbols as the Shortcuts pane. Needs the Input Monitoring permission, asked once at the toggle; a recording never fails over it — refused access just means no capsule, and Snapline says so.

Both overlays are drawn into the recorded frames, so trims, GIF conversions, and shares keep them. The toggles live in the Record Screen bar and Settings → Recording, are remembered, and ship off. Worth knowing: Show Keystrokes records what you type — ordinary text included — into the video.

Capture with Self-Timer: frame the region first, watch the countdown, and the shot fires by itself.

Capture

Capture with Self-Timer. Frame the region first, then a visible countdown runs — and the shot fires by itself. The delay is for staging: open the menu or tooltip you want inside the frame while the timer counts. Selection works exactly like a normal region capture (releasing the drag starts the timer — no extra confirm), and the countdown sits inside the region with the seconds, an Esc hint, and a ✕ to cancel. Nothing steals focus, so the menu you stage stays open, and the countdown never appears in the shot.

Pick 3, 5, or 10 seconds from the new status-menu item beside the Self-Timer setting — its top row remembers your last-used delay for a one-click repeat — or bind a shortcut in Settings → Shortcuts (it ships unbound). A canceled timer saves nothing and says so.

The invisible delay is gone. If you keep a sticky Self-Timer default set, region and main-display captures now show this same live countdown instead of silently stalling before the crosshair — same delay, visible and cancellable.

History learns starred captures. The relaunch now waits for the old copy to actually exit.

History

History learns starred captures. Star anything worth keeping and it survives the retention sweep unconditionally — it never expires, and a starred card asks before a manual delete goes through. Star from the card's hover control or its Star/Unstar menu item; a starred capture wears a badge at rest. The History toolbar gains a Starred filter that combines with search.

Robustness

Fixed: Snapline could quit itself and not come back after you answered the Screen Recording prompt. The relaunch waited a fixed half-second before reopening, which could fire while the old copy was still shutting down — so nothing came back, and no crash report explained it. The relaunch now waits for the old copy to actually exit, and when it can't reopen safely it stays running and tells you instead of vanishing. The prompt for one permission no longer triggers a relaunch offer for another.

Also fixed: the camera bubble no longer scans for cameras on the main thread, which could stall the Record Screen bar (and probe for nearby iPhones) each time it opened; its window now closes cleanly instead of racing an in-flight animation; and the bubble's style controls no longer risk a crash from a settings change or a removed gradient stop.
